One Room Challenge – Major Kitchen Renovation // Week 3
Finally this week we are seeing progress!

We made a huge dent in demolition over the last weekend, even though I said I was against demo before the dumpster made an appearance. I’m glad my husband talked me into biting the bullet and getting down to business because we are falling behind on our timeline!
As you know we have a bunch to catch up on to make our 6 week deadline, so please bear with us! Our timeline has gotten a little hairy due to a commitment I undertook during the first 3 weeks of this challenge. I knew it would take a couple days out of the week, so it has been a challenge all around! The main days for progress are Saturday and Sunday also due to the fact that we only have a couple hours to spare after work and we are doing the majority of this renovation by ourselves.
But let’s get to the good stuff!
All of the cabinets and appliances are out!
While taking out the dishwasher we made a discovery – there was carpet underneath the vinyl floor (gross!) I had a feeling there would be something under the current floor because it looked fairly new and didn’t have the crazy colors that the rest of the kitchen sported. Next we ripped out the flooring, which wasn’t easy to say the least!
Next on the list is removing the soffits around the perimeter of the kitchen. There was a bunch of loose insulation in them because we just blew it in last year. So we removed as much insulation as we could before it got too messy!
Also on the agenda for this weekend is sanding the walls. The walls are so fragile! They have many gouges and crumbly spots after stripping off the tightly adhered wallpaper. Though, we found the date underneath the paper stating when it was hung. It’s fun finding all the notes that the original owner put around the house.
Last for demolition will be the wall where the fridge, stove, and oven once were.
By doing all the demolition ourselves, we have saved a big chunk in our budget. It would have been roughly $25 an hour to have someone come in and do the demolition for us. Over the course of a few solid days, it really would have added up quickly! Luckily we have quite a bit of experience in this category after completely renovating the rest of the main floor.
Now that I can really focus on this project – I’m ready to kick it into overdrive as the weeks progress.
