Renovation

Installation of New Windows

On our quest to increase the energy efficiency in our home, we needed to replace the windows.

If you remember back to when we remodeled our kitchen, we only replaced four windows in the kitchen.

This left the remaining 10 windows in our house to be replaced. We knew this was going to be an expensive upgrade, but in turn decided it was feasible when factoring in resale value and ability for our homes heating and air conditioning units to work optimally.

The best bang for our buck for this project was to hire the professionals. I am not a window expert in the slightest!

Since we already did some research with the kitchen windows, we knew exactly what we were looking for.

We decided to use a different company than we used for the kitchen windows. The previous window manufacturer was local and closed their shop. That wasn’t the end of the world for us because we had a list of other manufacturers and local shops in town that carried new brands that would match.

This other company did a fantastic job! Actually way better than the previous company, and I wish we would have known and just gone with them for the kitchen too. Hindsight’s 2020!

We had a rough ballpark of the new cost associated by extrapolating the cost of our four kitchen windows. The new company came out and measured each of the 10 windows and gave us a bid based on the type of windows we wanted.

After accepting the bid, the windows were ordered and six weeks later they were ready to be delivered.

We moved everything away from the windows and put down drop cloths to protect our hardwood floors. From experience, it was going to be messy!

Starting at the front of the house, the workers removed the existing windows. The existing windows were single pane glass with a steel frame with brick surround, making removal a little more difficult. The workers had to break the windows in order to get them out, cut the frame from the brick and collapse what was left in order to pull them out.

After cleaning up, the new windows were set in and drilled into place. Trim was added around the outsides and caulking to seal and make everything look clean. Caulking was also added around the inside.

This process continued for every window in the front of the house and the back of the house as well.

We planned to paint the inside of the window sills after they finished installing the windows, which we had no problem doing.

All and all this new company was great! Everything went so smoothly and you could tell they really put a lot of pride into their work. No corners were cut and we are very happy with the way the new windows turned out!

Next up will be window treatments for some added privacy.

After that we will be finishing up the trim on the outside to prime and paint!
