One Room Challenge – Major Kitchen Renovation // Week 1
I decided to join the One Room Challenge (ORC)! If you are unfamiliar with the One Room Challenge, it is held biannually for 20 designers to show off their skills as they tackle one room. It is also a larger community by inviting guest participants (like me) to join in the festivities to transform a room in 6 weeks as well. You can follow along with all the participants here.
I am fully aware an entire kitchen renovation is a lot to undertake in 6 weeks. We are very ambitious and slightly crazy, so it may just work! Though, I have a sneaking suspicion we will be sliding into the finish line by the skin of our teeth.
Ever since we bought our home a little over a year and a half ago, we knew a kitchen gut job was looming. Just imagine that green and orange striped wall paper everywhere, because it really was…everywhere!
Fast forward – this is how the kitchen looks currently
So here’s the plan on what needs to be done in the mere 6 week time period:
- Replace old windows
- Remove cabinets
- Tear down wall to adjoining dining room
- Rip out linoleum floor
- Remove ceiling soffits
- Update electrical outlets and lighting
- Sheetrock and texture
- Set cabinets
- Install tile flooring
- New countertop and backsplash
- Hook up new appliances
All with a new kitchen layout…yeah we definitely are crazy!
Inspiration
The design inspiration for this space is an extension of the previous renovation of our home. Shades of gray and white at the forefront with some pops of color through accessories (I’m leaning towards earthy greens.) This will be a minimalist approach as I despise clutter. Everything needs to have a purpose and a place.
So lets kick off this One Room Challenge and come join the fun! I will be posting updates weekly, so stay tuned!
