One Room Challenge – Major Kitchen Renovation // Week 4
To see the process of our kitchen renovation thus far, check out the links below for the previous weeks.
This week there is a huge demolition reveal and I must say it’s pretty shocking!
The wall is down – hello, open concept!
It is wonderfully strange to be able to look from the side door all the way through to the fireplace in the living room. It’s taking some getting use to, but I’m loving it! I am also relieved to see the whole space come together in front of my eyes instead of just a concept on paper.
What’s not going according to plan
Originally the idea was to demo the wall to a third from the ground. This was going to act as a wall backing for the island cabinets and for the countertop to rest on for seating. Once we got down to it, the wall was too flimsy. We decided to take the whole wall down and build a new partial wall to hold the weight of the countertop.
During demolition, I noticed a problem in our cabinet measurements. The area for the pantry did not go as planned and we couldn’t cut the wall out about two feet from the floor due to the stairs underneath. I thought we did a good job double checking that area and were confident that the stairs would not interfere. . . I thought wrong. We will have to re-order the cabinet for that space with a different height. Unfortunately it will take a few weeks to be made and shipped to us, but it’s not a huge deal.
After sanding the walls and the ceiling last weekend, we are still coughing from all the plaster dust that got through our masks.
Also keeping the rest of our house clean has been a challenge for this clean-freak/germ-a-phobe. I tried to vacuum and mop only to have it dirty a day later. So, I have accepted the dirty house until further notice.
Now, onto some things that are going right this week!
Flooring was in pretty rough shape after demolition, so we are currently pulling staples and patching the dips in hopes it will be more level for the hardy backer.
The plumber moved the water line for the fridge and the electrician will soon be in to update the knob and tube wiring.
Our handyman is working on patching the ceiling and the walls to get them ready for texture.
A lot of the items for the kitchen are arriving this week and it feels a lot like Christmas!
The new cabinets are here too, which is a big relief to see them. Soon we will be able to get them set, so the tile can go down. Also the Quartz countertop template can be made off of the cabinets too.
Our remaining timeline really depends on how long it takes our handyman to get the plaster patched and tile laid. Other than that, the rest of the work will be fairly quick!
Remember to check out the rest of the One Room Challenge guest participants here. Everyone is doing such a great job and rooms are really coming together now!
