One Room Challenge – Major Kitchen Renovation // Week 6
In a perfect world, we would be revealing our finished kitchen today. But we do not live in a perfect world, nor is anything in renovating perfect.
It is the end of the One Room Challenge, but it is not the end for our kitchen updates!

This week was the definition of challenging.
Knowing that when we started this process, we expected to be pretty much done with the kitchen – minus a few small things here and there. Then, seeing all of the finished rooms for the challenge made me a little envious of their clean, done spaces. My husband put it nicely, “in a year from now, we won’t even remember the extra weeks it took.” He is so right! I keep telling myself that it will all be worth it in the end, and what are a few more weeks anyway at this point!
Even with all the chaos, some major accomplishments have been made!
The kitchen exhaust fan has been mounted and I am very pleased with how it turned out! A lot of time went into searching for an aesthetically pleasing, yet functional fan.
Since we had just taken down a wall to open up the space, the last thing I wanted to do was stick a chunky exhaust hood smack dab in the middle of the now open concept. The second option was a downdraft. Though, it would have taken up space in the cabinet below the cooktop. I wasn’t going to compromise the drawers below for pots and pans because I despise having them piled up on a shelf, only waiting to all tumble down when you go to grab one.
So, I found a flush mounted ceiling exhaust fan! It was also a bonus that it came in white to blend in more with the ceiling. I want the pendants and the island itself to be the focal point, not the fan.
Though, who knew that this fan would be a mystery to install for the professionals! It was like they were looking at a spaceship when they saw it and immediately asked for the directions.
The biggest addition to the kitchen this week was not the exhaust fan…but the kitchen cabinets!
I cannot believe how great they look! Also seeing the kitchen come together with them has been a relief. We were lucky enough to have my dad and his friend come from Seattle to install. It was a huge weight off our shoulders and we really couldn’t have done it without them!
Still on the to-do list is…
Touch up mudding for the ceiling/walls
Tile floor
Install pantry
Replace side and basement doors
Texture walls and ceiling
Paint…pretty much everything
Baseboards
Crown molding
Finish electrical
Countertop/backsplash template and install
Hook up appliances
Connect plumbing
Add cabinet handles
Clean, clean, clean!

Kitchens are lots of work! I had to smile when I saw this post, because even though you’re not completed… you got much farther along than we did hahah 🙂 Good luck!

Thank you! We are trying to keep moving forward. Kitchens are so much work, but are so worth it in the end.
